FABRICE BREJEAN : "30 SHORT STORIES"

« I'm doing a dirty work but I've got an excuse : I'm doing it in a dirty way » warns Belmondo introducing the album « 30 short stories ». Fabrice Bréjean works openly. When I ask him a few inquisitive questions on that matter, he responds that thievery is his true passion. I hesitated to turn him in to the cops but I didn't. One always has affection for outlaws.

Fabrice is digging up wherever he can. The sound is shitty ? What the hell ! He samples like crazy. He doesn't listen to a record like somebody else. Here, a bass line. There, a saxophone solo or an insistent refrain in the background. It must be kind of hard to live. For his relative I mean.

He is only 20 years old but his musical knowledge is already pretty impressive. His elderly brother initiated him to the hip-hop culture whereas his father was listening to jazz music all night long. His idols: Madlib, J Dilla, Cut Chemist, Dj Shadow... His role models: Bill Cosby (sic!) & Harvey Keitel.

You will listen to « 30 short stories » like you read short stories. You can graze from pillar to post. Listen to in one fell swoop or randomly. Fabrice Bréjean's cuts are like my sentences. Short. After 2 minutes and 30 secondes, the guy is bored. I read to him an excerpt from Proust's novel and he fell asleep. We are still happy he accepted to put out his first album on our q.o.d label. It brings new blood and I'm learning how to write text messages thanks to him. He even invited me to eat junk food. Too bad, I wasn't available that night.

Fabrice Bréjean is a fantastic « Beatmaker ». He is a master in the art of collage, a guru of putting mixed elements together. For once, you can trust me: download « 30 short stories », and resell it illegally. « I'm doing a dirty work but I've got an excuse : I'm doing it in a dirty way ».
